Bawaka Experience is an Aboriginal-owned and operated business on Yol?u Country, East Arnhem Land, welcoming travellers, students, and corporate groups to the Burarrwanga family homeland. Stay in beachfront cabins, safari tents, or camp bush-style. Enjoy a traditional Welcome to Country, learn about bush foods, remedies, Yol?u kinship and Moiety systems, and take part in activities like traditional weaving, spear fishing, and crab hunting. Directions
From Nhulunbuy, travel south along Dhupuma Rd/State Route 24, until you see the Central Arnhem Road on your right. Continue past the Central Arnhem Road onto Bawaka road and keep driving.
Bawaka Homeland is limited to 4-wheel drive vehicles and experienced drivers. There is a 17 km bush track drive from the locked gate, followed by a 5km beach drive. Depending on road conditions and tides, the caretaker may need to meet you along the track, or instruct you to follow the signs into Bawaka.

At Bawaka, a Yolngu homeland in East Arnhem Land, visitors are expected to show deep respect for Yolngu cultural protocols. This means following the guidance of traditional owners, asking permission before entering certain areas, refraining from taking photos without consent, and participating in activities with an open mind and heart. Yolngu law (Madayin) governs all aspects of life, and honoring these practices is essential to building trust and truly connecting with the land and its people.
